Back to the Basics: Coconut Oil

I'm not sure my post is about getting back to the basics as much as it is using products from nature.  I doubt my grandmother had coconut oil to use in the early 1900's, of course she made due with what she did have available.  We, on the other hand, have the world at our fingertips with the internet and it wondrous ability to bring items from far, far away right to our door.
I've recently been introduced to the wonders of organic coconut oil, first through the West ladies at Homestead Blessings and then through the circle of blogs I love to scour for homesteading ways and ideas.
When I had a cold a couple of weeks ago I had the usual week of blowing my nose and chapped lips that go along with the cold.  Well, I didn't have any form of chapstick so I got a small container and put some coconut oil in it.  As needed, I just put a bit on my finger and rubbed it over my sore nose and hurting lips, instant soothing!  Of course after the cold was over I threw the small container and leftover oil away, but it was certainly the perfect cure.  I love learning all these new ways to use coconut oil and especially because there are no 'odd' ingredients.
God's earth has everything we need without all the man made extras, industries might be necessary but I wonder if it's worth the damage that's being done to the earth.

FOR TODAY
March 19th, 2012 7:00am
Here in Kentucky

Outside my window...Still dark but I hear the birds chirping through our open windows.   It's odd having them open in March but I'm not complaining!

I am thinking...of everything on my to do list, spring and warmer temps bring lots of outside work added to spring cleaning inside.

I am thankful... that my dad's surgery is over and hopefully there will be no more treatments necessary.

In the kitchen... Great northern beans going in the crock pot this morning for tonight's meal.

I am wearing... it's still very early so it's a gown still.

I am creating... crocheting the edges around the 40 dishcloths I've crocheted.  Finished up sachets, herbal comfies, herbal sleep pillows.  Today need to make some soap and get the candles started.

I am going...no place today, love my days at home!

I am wondering...when we can start planting outside.  We're being teased with temps in the 70's and normally cannot plant until May 15th, just play it by ear I guess.

I am reading... nothing right now, truly no time.

I am hoping... to get our garage wood shop all set up again now that the weather is warm.

I am looking forward to... all the sewing I have to do.  I love sitting in my little sewing nook, my machine humming along while listening to Fernando Ortega hymns, pure bliss!

I am learning... the healing properties of herbs, it's truly amazing how things in nature or all we really need medicinally, learning more every day!

Around the house... hubby left for work at 4am, everyone else is still sleeping.

I am pondering... some very hard but exciting decisions we need to make very soon, lots of prayer and preparation.

A favorite quote for today...
“Worrying is carrying tomorrow's load with today's strength- carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn't empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.”
Corrie ten Boom

One of my favorite things... long talks with our adult children, sometimes we can just sit and talk for hours.  I've always had that with my family and love that I have that with my kids also.

A few plans for the rest of the week: lots of chores, inside and outside.

A peek into my day...looking forward to getting the clothesline out today!

Book Review: Living with Confidence in a Chaotic World

This is an excellent book by Dr. David Jeremiah, I really think it's wisdom is prevalent for today but would be just as important at any time in history.

Dr. Jeremiah gives us a list of C's to help us stay on plan.  We are to stay:
Calm
Compassionate
Constructive
Challenged
Connected
Centered
Confident
Consistent

As we deal with all the current unrest and fear of the unknown in our country and throughout the world we are reminded to stay calm and focus on the Word.
In the times of chaos we tend to try to fix everything ourselves and want to hurry and rush on to the next thing when in fact we need to delve into the Word and focus on Christ.
Not only are the problems of this world sometimes beyond fixable, but maybe it's not important to fix it at all.  We are to let go of thinking that the world is our comfort when the world would and will turn away from us any moment, Christ is Christ, now and forever.
Any question that we need answered in the God's Word.  What this book does is point us to the scriptures that will guide us through.
Dr. Jeremiah is an excellent author and this book truly is a book for 'these' times.

Thomas Nelson Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

Is it spring?

We're getting some incredibly spring-like weather here in Kentucky.  Everything is already starting to get green and we're having lots of rain also.  This is how our May weather usually is, hard to believe it's only March!  We started some of our seeds in trays yesterday, with all the windows and screen doors open!  That's just unheard of here in Kentucky!
I must say, it is so nice to open the windows, especially since we've had colds lately.  Love airing everything out real well.  The only problem with the warmer weather is that you are not really ready to spring clean just yet, just doesn't seem time, but after you pull back the curtains you see the windows could really use a good scrubbing!  Of course with the rain we can't get them clean just yet (doesn't that sound like a good excuse to you!!?), but all in time.
We are working hard to get our inventory built up to start our online store back up, so much to do, so little time!  You know with all the things you can buy these days it's hard to believe you can't buy a few more hours in the day, I could really use them.
Lots of sewing to do so I really must move over to the sewing nook, start up some Fernando Ortega hymns and get lost in the rhythm of the machine!

Prayer Request

My dad is having surgery today to remove a tumor on his bladder.  Prayers would be appreciated.  Our prayer is that the surgery goes fine and that the tumor be benign.  Thanks dear friends.

Update****thanks for the prayers.  The tumors were cancerous but they gave him some chemo while we were there and the hope is that will get rid of any leftover tumorous cells.  Not the best outcome but God is so good!

Sick Days

Katie and I have been knocked down this week with a cold.  Thankfully we're both almost over it, I'm surprised that it has not lingered for her because of her immune system but I'm thinking the Cod Liver Oil that she has been taking has really boosted her system.  (Thanks again sweet Sandy!!!)
Our son Christopher has been taking care of us, making our meals, doing the laundry, etc.  It's a wonderful thing to teach your children how to do these things so when the time arises they can take over as needed, or take care of themselves when they're on their own.
Now that I'm well I'm going to be working on all those things that need to be made to sell in our online shop, lots to do, I'm going to make a link on my sidebar to help me stay motivated and keep track of what we're making.
Loving the warmer temps and looking forward to some sunshine days, so ready to be outside digging in the dirt and sowing plants but that will have to wait awhile.
We are starting some of our seeds indoors so at least we get a good start on some of them.
Springtime is such a time of hope isn't it?  You just know things are getting better, warmer and brighter.  We spring our clocks forward this weekend so we'll have longer evenings to enjoy!
There's just always something to look forward to!  God showers us daily with blessings that we are so undeserving of, how good is He?!!!

FOR TODAY
March 1st, 2012 6:30pm
Here in Kentucky

Outside my window...
Sun is starting to set, lots of brown outside but noticed today that our tree out front is budding!  Always welcome Spring!

I am thinking...
that life is full of surprises, some welcome, some not.  How boring life would be if we got everything we wanted when we wanted it and had nothing to look forward to, no goals to work towards.

I am thankful...
to turn the calender page to March, February always seems like a long month, especially during leap year!

In the kitchen...
We had sandwiches (ham, cheese, turkey, bread and butter pickles, homemade mayo on whole grain bread) as a late afternoon lunch so later we'll just have something light.

I am wearing...
Purple calico jumper and pink sweater.

I am creating...
a skirt for Katie, have a skirt I make myself that I need to tweek a bit.  Sachets, headache soothing comfies, herb pillows, etc.

I am going...going to run a few errands with Katie in a bit, need to go to Kroger and Tractor Supply.

I am wondering...
how to get more minutes in my days...any ideas?

I am reading...
the first book in the from Annie's Attic.

I am hoping...
to get some of our seeds started this weekend.

I am looking forward to...
working in the wonderful soil, there's nothing better!

I am learning... patience, such a hard lesson.

Around the house... hubby is sneezing dealing with a cold.

I am pondering...
some very hard decisions we need to make very soon, lots of prayer and preparation.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things...
working with my hands, creativity is such a wonderful way to feel productive and for me it's so very therapeutic.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
only one day left!

A peek into my day...

A cabin in the woods, one of the things we're pondering (this is not ours, just a pic I found on pinterest)
